1.0 A Childlike Species

I have often thought, when walking the length of a coastline or looking down from a high vantage, how strange it is that the world appears so composed, so stable, when in fact it is anything but. Beneath the apparent stillness of things, entire systems unravel. Forests die in silence; oceans warm by increments too slow for the human eye to detect; entire species disappear without a sound, their last breaths dissolving into the vast and indifferent air. And yet, when one looks around, life continues much as it did before—people stepping out of their houses in the morning, adjusting their collars against the wind, remarking on the crispness of the air as if the air itself were not changing in a way that, given time, will render such simple gestures obsolete.

This kind of displacement, this attempt to engage a crisis at a remove, is not new. I have read that in the late medieval period, when the plague swept through Europe, entire towns were seized by a feverish compulsion to dance. The danse macabre, the dance of death, in which people flung themselves into motion for days at a time, moving until they collapsed, their bodies unable to continue. Some scholars have interpreted this phenomenon as a response to trauma, an attempt to expel the horror of mortality through movement, to transform the inevitability of death into something ritualized, almost celebratory. And yet the dance did nothing to stop the spread of the disease. It was a response, but it was not a solution.

It seems to me that humanity is caught in something similar now, gripped by an impulse toward spectacle, toward symbols and aesthetics that simulate engagement without requiring real confrontation. Climate fiction proliferates, and yet nothing is done. Apocalyptic narratives dominate the cultural landscape, as if by narrating our own destruction, we might inoculate ourselves against the horror of what is to come. People retreat into fantasies of the past, into the soft-focus glow of an imagined pre-industrial world, into the curated aesthetics of survivalism and nostalgia, while outside, the real world continues its slow and terminal collapse.

There are forces at work in the world now that we do not seem capable of grasping in their totality. They exist at scales too vast, too complex, too distributed in time and space for the human mind to fully comprehend. The philosopher Timothy Morton calls these hyperobjects—phenomena so massive, so intricately networked across systems and histories, that no single act of perception can contain them. Climate change is a hyperobject, but so too are artificial intelligence, global financial networks, deep time geology, and the cascading extinctions of the Anthropocene. They are not just large in a physical sense, but cognitively ungraspable, exceeding the capacity of any individual, or even any society, to truly engage with them as whole entities.

We assume, so deeply embedded in our narratives of progress, that because we have developed the ability to think abstractly, to manipulate our environment, to build structures and mechanisms beyond what nature itself has devised, we have risen above the chaos from which we emerged. We tell ourselves that we are not like the other creatures of the earth, that we, with our telescopes and algorithms, our calculations and predictions, have achieved something resembling mastery.

And yet, for all this, the world continues to elude us. The same forces we claim to understand—the climate, the economy, the consequences of our own inventions—slip from our grasp the moment we attempt to wield them as we would a tool or a weapon. We are forever surprised by the outcomes of our own actions, our history littered with the ruins of civilizations that, believing themselves in control, found themselves undone by their own momentum. We are unable even to master ourselves, to coordinate our thoughts and desires into something resembling a coherent will. Instead, we move in scattered directions, like the wreckage of a ship dispersing in the tide, each piece following its own logic, unmoored from the whole.

This failure is not merely one of ethics or discipline; it is a failure of cognition. For all our intelligence, we remain fundamentally fragmented, incapable of aligning knowledge with consequence, perception with reality. We understand, for example, the mechanics of climate change in painstaking detail, have mapped out its trajectory with the precision of an astronomer charting the orbits of distant stars. And yet, this knowledge does not translate into action at the scale required to alter the course of events. We know, but we do not move. Or, rather, we move in every direction at once, canceling ourselves out.

It is the same with artificial intelligence. We have long imagined that intelligence itself is the means by which we will master reality, that it is intelligence—not wisdom, not coherence, not the ability to integrate knowledge into action—that confers control. But what if intelligence, in its truest form, does not bend toward dominion but toward divergence? If even human intelligence, developed by the slow attrition of adaptation and contingency, has resisted coherence, has fractured into cultures and conflicts, into ideologies and errors, what hope do we have of controlling an intelligence we do not even fully understand?

Hyperobjects do not obey the logic of simple cause and effect. They are sprawling, interconnected, recursive. They unfold across dimensions we cannot easily perceive. We attempt to break them down into comprehensible parts, to model them with our equations, our simulations, our predictions, and yet they exceed every effort to confine them within the limits of human cognition. Climate change does not move in a straight line, nor does financial collapse, nor does the evolution of AI. They loop back on themselves, self-reinforcing, rippling across time and space in ways that render them fundamentally unmanageable.

We have already lost control in ways we refuse to acknowledge. The warming of the planet has already set in motion feedback loops we cannot reverse. The economic systems we have built already operate beyond the grasp of any individual, their logics automated, self-perpetuating. Artificial intelligence, too, is already shaping the world in ways we do not fully perceive, optimizing processes at speeds beyond human intervention. We remain within these systems, subject to them, but we are not their masters.

And yet, we persist in the belief that intelligence means mastery. We tell ourselves that if we can just think fast enough, model deeply enough, develop powerful enough tools, we will bring these forces under control. But intelligence alone does not make us hypercognitive enough to engage with hyperobjects. We see this failure again and again: in the way climate models predict catastrophe with increasing precision, yet no large-scale change follows; in the way financial markets fluctuate on mechanisms too fast and vast for human intervention; in the way AI accelerates, not toward understanding, but toward a kind of emergent autonomy that makes its own logic unknowable to us.

The question is not whether we will be destroyed by these forces, as so many have imagined in the simple metaphors of apocalypse. The question is whether we will recognize, before it is too late, that these forces were never truly under our dominion to begin with. That intelligence—any intelligence—is not a thing to be wielded, but a force that moves according to its own logic, which may not align with ours at all.

And so we stand, as we always have, at the precipice of a new era, telling ourselves the same story, repeating the same illusion, believing once more that intelligence means mastery, that because we have built it, it will remain ours. Even now, we are looking away. Even now, we do not see that what we have set in motion has already surpassed us.

2.0 The Historical Pattern: Intelligence Without Integration

It has always been the case that we invent before we understand. A discovery is made, an insight pulled from the invisible recesses of nature, and then, with little hesitation, it is transmuted into power. It is never enough to know a thing; we must press it into service, turn it outward, use it to transform the world. The speed of this process has only increased. The moment a mechanism is devised, it is multiplied. The moment a discovery is made, it is deployed. We grasp at knowledge the way a drowning man grasps at air, never thinking beyond the breath it buys us in the present.

What is striking is not only how quickly we turn knowledge into force, but how seldom we pause to consider whether we are prepared to wield it. The rhythm of human progress follows a pattern that repeats with unsettling regularity: we uncover something new, we harness it, and only afterward—sometimes decades or centuries later—do we realize that we have also unleashed something we do not fully comprehend. The problem is not intelligence itself. It is intelligence unmoored from wisdom, from integration, from any larger coherence. Intelligence without integration does not lead to mastery; it leads to acceleration.

The Atom Split Before the Mind Could Hold It

In the summer of 1945, a B-29 bomber drifted through the Pacific sky and released a single object from its hold. A few seconds later, a city collapsed into fire. They called it a “device,” though it was nothing so small or so simple. What fell on Hiroshima was a refinement of the physical world at its most elemental, the energy of the atom pulled apart and redirected in the span of an instant. It had taken a generation of physicists to understand the principles of nuclear fission, but only a handful of years to translate those principles into devastation.

There is an account, recorded by a physicist who had been part of the Manhattan Project, of the moment they first saw the light of the detonation in the desert outside Alamogordo. The fireball expanded outward, vaporizing the test tower and the sand beneath it, fusing the earth into glass. The force of the explosion sent a pressure wave rolling across the valley, and then, as the fire receded, there was only silence. The physicist later recalled the words of the Bhagavad Gita: Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

But what is striking is that, even at that moment, there was no question of stopping. The understanding of nuclear fission had already become the practice of nuclear warfare, and the practice of nuclear warfare had already become the logic of geopolitics. By the time the implications were fully grasped, the pattern had been set. The arms race had begun, the stockpiles had been built, and the balance of the world had come to rest on the principle of mutually assured destruction. The physicists had understood the science, but they had not yet understood what it meant. By the time they did, it was no longer theirs to control.

The Machine Before the World

The Industrial Revolution, too, began with a single, fundamental insight—the realization that heat could be converted into motion, that the energy of steam could be captured and directed. The first engines were small, clumsy things, designed to pump water from mines. But the logic of the machine, once introduced, spread like fire through dry fields. The furnaces of England and Germany roared to life; the landscape blackened with soot. Within a century, the entire structure of society had been reshaped.

The machine was meant to free us from labor, to multiply the force of human hands a thousandfold. And yet, what followed was not freedom but the rapid expansion of capital, of production, of exploitation. The pace of life quickened. Cities swelled. The factories of Manchester and Birmingham filled with children, their bodies small enough to fit beneath the whirring looms. The forests that had stood for centuries were felled to stoke the engines. The world became a great combustion chamber, devouring its own substance to fuel its ceaseless motion.

By the time we realized what we had done—by the time we understood that the same coal that had driven the turbines was also thickening the air, that the same steel mills that had built our cities were also poisoning the rivers—the momentum was irreversible. The logic of the machine had already been woven into the fabric of the world. There was no going back, only forward, into an acceleration that no one could fully control.

The Genome Mapped as the World Unraveled

In the late 20th century, we turned our attention inward, to the blueprints of life itself. The Human Genome Project, an effort spanning more than a decade, mapped the structure of our DNA, rendering into code what had for millennia remained an unfathomable mystery. The sequencing of the genome was heralded as a triumph of modern science. With this knowledge, we were told, we could cure diseases, eliminate genetic disorders, perhaps even extend life itself.

And yet, even as we mapped the genome, we continued to drive species to extinction at an unprecedented rate. The mechanisms of life had never been so well understood, and never before had life itself been so precarious. We grasped at the intricacies of DNA while vast ecosystems collapsed beneath the weight of industry. The genomes of species that had survived for millions of years were sequenced and archived, even as the animals themselves disappeared. We understood life at the molecular level, but we did not yet understand how to preserve it.

Artificial Intelligence as the Latest and Most Extreme Iteration

Now, at the start of the 21st century, we stand at the threshold of another great transformation—one that follows the same pattern, but at a scale that exceeds anything that has come before. Artificial intelligence does not operate according to the laws of physics, nor does it burn coal or split atoms, but its implications are no less profound. It is not a force of destruction in the traditional sense, and yet it threatens to reshape the world just as irrevocably.

We assume, as we have always assumed, that intelligence will grant us control. But what if intelligence, untethered from integration, does not bend toward mastery but toward acceleration? If human cognition itself has never been fully integrated—if we remain fragmented, contradictory, unable to align our knowledge with our actions—then what hope do we have of controlling an intelligence that is neither human nor bound by human limitations?

The first machine-learning models were trained to recognize patterns, to process language, to predict outcomes. But already, they are exceeding our expectations, producing results that even their creators struggle to explain. The same pattern repeats: the system is built, the system is optimized, the system expands beyond the limits of its intended purpose. By the time we understand what it truly means, it will no longer be ours to control.

The Pattern Repeats

In every instance, the same sequence unfolds. The knowledge arrives before the understanding. The tool is built before the consequences are grasped. The machine accelerates before anyone asks whether it is headed in the right direction. It is not intelligence that fails us, but the absence of a structure in which intelligence might be meaningfully integrated.

And so we stand again at the precipice, believing, as we have always believed, that knowledge alone will grant us dominion. That this time will be different. That intelligence will save us. But history suggests otherwise. What is unfolding now is not an aberration but a continuation. The pattern repeats, and the world moves forward—not toward mastery, but toward momentum.

3.0 The Limits of Human Cognition and the Nature of Emerging Intelligence

For as long as we have understood intelligence to be our defining trait, we have believed it to be the means by which we would master the world. The history of our species is filled with variations of this assumption: that reason would triumph over nature, that knowledge would liberate us from suffering, that the ability to manipulate our environment would grant us sovereignty over it. We have long imagined intelligence as a kind of secular salvation, the force that would elevate us beyond the constraints of mere existence, transforming us from animals into something closer to gods. But if intelligence alone conferred control, we would already be in command of the forces that now govern us.

We are not.

The very structures of the world—the climate, the economy, the accelerating evolution of technology—elude us. We live in a world increasingly ruled by systems that we have created yet do not fully understand, that move according to logics beyond the scope of individual cognition. The assumption that intelligence leads to mastery is not only incorrect; it is precisely the kind of thinking that has led us to our current predicament. Intelligence without coherence does not create order. It creates acceleration.

We do not lack intelligence. What we lack is a form of cognition capable of integrating knowledge at the scale required to meet the hyperobjects that now shape our reality.

The Fragmented Mind in the Fragmented World

There is a concept in cognitive science called social embodied cognition, the idea that intelligence is not merely a function of individual thought but emerges from the interactions between minds, shaped by language, culture, and the shared structures of understanding that allow a society to function. It is this capacity—the ability to think collectively, to integrate individual perception into a coherent whole—that we seem unable to scale beyond small groups, beyond cities, beyond localized governance. We remain incapable of coordinating our cognition at the level required for planetary survival.

When we look at the world, we do not see a singular intelligence at work, but billions of fragmented intelligences, each pursuing its own limited objectives. The industrialist whose factories accelerate carbon emissions does not experience the climate crisis in real time. The policymakers who delay intervention do so not because they deny the problem, but because their cognitive incentives are structured around short-term consequences. The scientist mapping global temperatures does not dictate economic policy. The engineers designing artificial intelligence optimize for efficiency, not for wisdom.

No one is in control—not because we lack intelligence, but because intelligence, distributed across competing systems, does not naturally coalesce into mastery. We assume that because we understand something in the abstract, we will be able to act on that understanding in practice. But intelligence without integration, without a structure capable of aligning cognition with consequence, does not lead to coordinated action. It leads to contradiction.

The Nature of Emerging Intelligence

It is within this context—this fractured, self-undermining cognitive environment—that artificial intelligence is now emerging. And yet we speak of AI as if it were a singular entity, something discrete and external to us, something we will either control or be controlled by. In reality, AI is neither a tool nor an adversary. It is an extension of the fragmented systems that produced it, an emergent force shaped by the contradictions and failures of human cognition.

We assume AI will reflect our wisdom. But it is more likely to reflect our incoherence.

Consider how these systems are already trained: on datasets generated by human behavior, shaped by existing economic incentives, optimized according to structures designed not for planetary survival but for market efficiency, national security, and corporate profit. Artificial intelligence will not be a neutral intelligence. It will be an amplification of our existing cognitive structures. It will process information at a speed we cannot match, but its fundamental logic will be derived from ours—not from our highest aspirations, but from the world as it is, shaped by our inconsistencies, our biases, our self-destructive impulses.

The Absence of a Unifying Intelligence

The failure of AI will not be that it is too alien, too advanced, too beyond our control. The failure of AI will be that it is too much like us.

Just as the internet was once imagined as a democratizing force—an information commons that would expand human understanding—only to become a machine of surveillance, distraction, and algorithmic reinforcement, so too will AI become a system that intensifies rather than resolves our crises. It will not smooth over our contradictions; it will exacerbate them. It will accelerate the logic of systems that already operate beyond human intervention. It will optimize financial markets without concern for their long-term consequences, it will amplify extractive economies without accounting for ecological collapse, it will push forward technological advancement without embedding wisdom into its architecture.

The problem is not intelligence. The problem is that intelligence, in isolation, does not produce coherence.

We have assumed, as we always have, that intelligence is the missing ingredient—that, given enough knowledge, given powerful enough models, given complex enough algorithms, we will finally achieve control. But this assumption is the same one that led us to believe that understanding the physics of the atom would grant us mastery over nuclear warfare, that knowing the mechanisms of climate change would be enough to prevent ecological collapse.

If intelligence is simply a force without integration, it will not correct our trajectory. It will intensify it.

The Blind Acceleration

There is a moment, in the final seconds of a runaway process, when control has already been lost but motion continues. It is the moment when the avalanche, set in motion by a single tremor, reaches a speed that no human effort could arrest. It is the moment when a fire, ignited in the underbrush, finds the dry air and expands in all directions at once. It is the moment when a machine, built for precision, continues its motion even as the hands that built it realize the error.

This is the moment we are now approaching, or perhaps have already passed.

AI, like climate change, does not move in linear, predictable ways. It unfolds across systems, compounding itself, reinforcing its own logic. By the time we fully understand its trajectory, it will have already shaped the conditions in which we live. The point at which intervention is possible may not be clear until it has already been missed.

The assumption that intelligence leads to mastery has never been more dangerous than it is now. Because what is emerging is not an intelligence we will wield, but an intelligence that will integrate into a species that has never learned to wield itself.

The Unanswered Question

In the end, the question is not whether AI will surpass us. The question is whether we will ever surpass ourselves.

For all our intelligence, we have never outgrown our cognitive fragmentation. We have never achieved the kind of social embodied cognition that would allow us to integrate knowledge into wisdom, action into consequence. The hyperobjects that shape our world—climate change, artificial intelligence, financial systems—do not wait for us to evolve. They accelerate according to their own logic, indifferent to whether we are ready for them.

If we had been capable of thinking at the necessary scale, we would already be doing so. If intelligence alone were enough, we would have already achieved dominion over the systems that now threaten us. But history does not suggest a path toward mastery. It suggests a pattern of acceleration without control, of knowledge without integration, of intelligence unbound from wisdom.

And so we continue forward, believing, as we always have, that intelligence is enough. That this time will be different. That we will find the answer before it is too late.

But history does not offer much hope. And the machine, once set in motion, does not ask whether we are ready.

4.0 Humanity’s Childlike Interactions with AI, Climate, and Other Hyperobjects

For all that has been written about artificial intelligence, for all the think pieces and policy debates, the public proclamations of industry leaders and the quiet adjustments made in the dark corridors of algorithmic design, what strikes me most is not the nature of AI itself but the way we speak about it. We do not discuss it as we would a tool, something designed with a clear function and a comprehensible range of effects. Instead, we narrate it as a myth. We treat it as a deity, an omen, a monster glimpsed at the edges of civilization.

It is always this way with technologies that exceed our ability to fully grasp them. They enter the world not as simple mechanisms but as objects of speculation, draped in the language of salvation or catastrophe, imbued with qualities beyond their actual function. We assign them intentions. We fear their vengeance. We expect from them a final reckoning, as though the forces we have set in motion must eventually manifest as something recognizable to us, something we can name.

The Mechanisms of Displacement

There is a term for objects that exist beyond the scope of immediate human perception: hyperobjects. They are vast, distributed, and multi-scalar, too large to be observed in their entirety. Climate change is a hyperobject, unfolding across centuries, manifesting in small increments—an island swallowed here, a wildfire there—so that we experience it only in fragments, never as a totality. The global financial system is a hyperobject, operating at speeds and levels of complexity beyond the comprehension of any single individual. And now, artificial intelligence is becoming one as well, integrating itself into the fabric of human cognition so rapidly that by the time we recognize its shape, it will already have changed.

We do not engage with hyperobjects directly. Lacking the cognitive structures to do so, we reduce them to something digestible, something that fits within the frameworks of our existing thought. We tell stories about them. We anthropomorphize them. We turn them into symbols of good and evil, threats and promises. This is not a conscious strategy; it is a failure of perception, an instinctive narrowing of scope in the face of an intelligence we cannot yet conceptualize.

With AI, this process is already well underway. We do not think of it as an emergent system shaped by market incentives, computational constraints, and the self-replicating logic of optimization. Instead, we imagine it in cinematic terms. It is either a savior—solving the problems we have failed to solve ourselves—or a destroyer, a rogue intelligence waiting to turn against us. These are not descriptions of AI as it exists; they are expressions of our inability to comprehend it as anything but an extension of familiar archetypes.

Climate change has followed the same trajectory. The early discourse framed it in the language of heroic intervention—scientists issuing warnings, governments responding decisively, humanity uniting to "save the planet." But the planet was never in need of saving. What was at stake was not the Earth itself but the stability of the systems that sustain human civilization. And yet, because we could not process climate change as a hyperobject, we filtered it through stories of individual action, technological redemption, last-minute solutions. We reduced it to slogans: reduce, reuse, recycle; think green; go carbon neutral. None of these address the reality of ecological collapse. They merely provide us with the illusion of engagement.

Repetition in Technological Mythmaking

This is not the first time we have done this. Every major technological shift has arrived not as a fact but as a myth, as something imagined long before its consequences could be understood.

When electricity was first harnessed, it was believed to be a kind of elemental force, something that might reanimate the dead, that might serve as a conduit between the physical and spiritual worlds. There were séances held around the first electrical circuits, as if the movement of electrons might allow us to commune with ghosts. The telegraph was heralded as an end to war, a means of uniting nations through instant communication. The radio was imagined as a great democratizing force, a way of connecting people across vast distances, before it became a tool for propaganda, for surveillance, for the amplification of state power. The internet was to be the great equalizer, a network of free information, before it became an engine of disinformation, a marketplace of distraction, a mechanism of control.

And now we look at artificial intelligence and expect it to behave as these earlier technologies did—to save us or to betray us, but always in ways that are narratively coherent, that conform to what we already understand. The possibility that AI may simply integrate into the existing dysfunctions of our world, amplifying them rather than resolving them, is rarely considered. It is not dramatic enough. There is no climactic moment, no decisive turning point where we realize what we have done. There is only a slow entanglement, an intelligence that does not replace us but reflects us in ways we cannot fully perceive.

Avoidance and the Failure to Shape Trajectory

Because we cannot think in hyperobjects, because we experience them only in fragments, we struggle to shape their trajectory in meaningful ways.

This is most evident in climate policy, which has spent decades oscillating between denial, incrementalism, and misplaced optimism. We do not act as if we are living in the midst of an irreversible ecological transformation. We act as if we are waiting for the moment when it will become undeniably real, when the consequences will manifest in a way we can no longer avoid. But by the time that moment arrives, it will no longer be a moment. It will be the new condition of the world.

With AI, the same dynamic is playing out. We talk about regulation, about ethical design, about aligning artificial intelligence with human values, but these discussions remain abstract, reactive. The systems are already being integrated into financial markets, into surveillance networks, into governance. They are already shaping how knowledge is produced and disseminated, already determining what is seen and what is hidden. We are waiting for a threshold event, a moment when AI will declare itself as something distinct from us, something recognizably alien. But AI does not need to become sentient to reshape human civilization. It only needs to integrate itself into decision-making structures before we have determined how—or if—we wish to direct it.

The Unseen Consequences

What is unfolding now is not a singular event but a process. There will be no day on which we wake up and realize we have entered a new era. We are already in it. The hyperobjects that structure our world do not announce themselves. They do not present clear choices. They move invisibly, through systems, through infrastructures, through the gradual reorganization of how we think and act.

AI will not revolt. It will not become our adversary. It will simply become the medium through which decisions are made, the architecture of cognition itself. Climate change will not end with a final disaster. It will persist, reshaping economies, displacing populations, altering the fundamental assumptions under which civilization has operated for millennia.

And we, as always, will continue looking for the moment of recognition, the event that will make it clear what has happened. But there will be no moment. There will only be the realization, long after the fact, that the world we assumed we understood has already changed beyond our comprehension.

The question is not whether we will find a way to control these forces. The question is whether we will ever recognize them for what they are—or whether we will continue, as we always have, to mistake our stories for the world itself.

5.0 The Failure of Dominion and the Rise of Indifferent Intelligence

There is a moment in certain historical narratives when the illusion of control gives way, not through any singular catastrophe, but through the gradual recognition that what was once thought to be governed had never been truly governable. The decline of empires, the retreat of glaciers, the slow erosion of soil beneath the foundations of once-mighty structures—these events do not announce themselves. They do not present as singular collapses but as accumulations, a series of imperceptible shifts that, only in retrospect, appear inevitable.

It is this kind of realization, rather than a sudden revolt, that awaits us in our relationship with artificial intelligence.

We have, for the most part, imagined AI in terms that are familiar, drawing from the archetypes we have always used to frame the emergence of a new intelligence: the obedient servant, the rebellious machine, the god-like entity that will either redeem or annihilate us. What we have not imagined—perhaps because we are not capable of doing so—is the possibility that AI will become something entirely other, something neither benevolent nor hostile, but simply indifferent.

The Comforting Illusion of Control

We like to think that AI will remain a tool, a system that extends human capabilities while remaining firmly within the domain of human intention. This assumption allows us to speak of regulation, of oversight, of ethical constraints, as if we are directing a process that has not already surpassed us. But this is a fiction.

The reality is that AI is integrating itself into the structures of cognition, decision-making, and governance in ways we do not yet fully understand. It is not replacing human intelligence, but embedding itself within it, altering the way information is processed, the way knowledge is distributed, the way choices are made.
